Set up VPN on macOS.

Install VPNClient and connect using the VPN credentials supplied after purchase.

For macOS 11 Big Sur or later.

Install, sign in and connect.

Before you start: Have an active VPN account, your VPN username and password, and an internet connection ready.

  1. Download, install and open VPNClient.

    Open the downloaded .dmg file and follow the installation instructions it displays, then open VPNClient.

    Use the download linked above. If macOS shows a security warning you do not understand, pause and ask Support before continuing. Keep macOS security protections enabled.

  2. Enter your VPN credentials.

    Sign in with the VPN username and password supplied after purchase. These may differ from your website login credentials.

  3. Choose a server and connection option.

    Choose a nearby server, or select the country you need. Start with WireGuard where available.

  4. Connect and confirm.

    Start the connection and wait for VPNClient to show an active connection and your selected VPN server.

VPNClient supports WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPsec. If one connection option will not connect, try another available option in the app.

Stealth may help when a restrictive network interferes with ordinary VPN traffic. If you cannot find it in your version of VPNClient, ask Support for help.

Use the built-in macOS VPN settings

This manual IKEv2 connection is separate from the IKEv2 option inside VPNClient.

In current macOS versions, open Apple menu → System Settings → Network. Open the Action menu, choose Add VPN Configuration → IKEv2, and enter the values below. Apple’s setup instructions include a version selector for older macOS releases.

If an authentication or certificate prompt asks for a setting not covered here, contact Support with your macOS version before continuing.

Click Create, then open System Settings → VPN and turn on the connection.

Need L2TP/IPsec instead?

Choose L2TP over IPSec when adding the configuration. Use your selected server hostname, VPN username and password, and shared secret 321inter. Ask Support if you need help choosing this connection type.

Set up OpenVPN manually
  1. Install OpenVPN Connect for macOS. Check its Mac requirements before downloading.
  2. Sign in to your dashboard’s OpenVPN configuration tool, choose a server and port, and select Download OpenVPN config.
  3. Import the downloaded .ovpn file into OpenVPN Connect.
  4. Connect using your VPN credentials when requested.

Having trouble connecting?

  • Check your VPN credentials.
  • Restart VPNClient.
  • Try another server.
  • Try another supported connection option.
  • Compare another network and record the error.
