VPN troubleshooting

VPN not working?Find the break.

If your VPN will not connect — or it connects but a website, app or call still fails — work through the connection one step at a time.

VPN connection failure shown between a device and the internet

Quick answer

Why is my VPN not working?

A VPN problem generally falls into one of two groups: the VPN itself will not connect, or the VPN connects but the destination still does not work.

Likely causes can include one server IP being blocked, local Wi-Fi or firewall interference, protocol restrictions, old browser or app sessions, GPS or device signals, account or payment region, app-store region, website VPN detection, or third-party service outages and rules.

Change one variable at a time.

Diagnostic router

What exactly is happening?

Choose the state that best matches what you can see. Each path starts with reversible checks and changes one variable at a time.

01Connection

VPN will not connect

Connection fails, times out or disconnects immediately.

Credentials, one server, the selected protocol or the local network may be involved.
FIRST CHECKS
  • Verify the supplied account details
  • Try another current server
  • Try another supported protocol
  • Compare another network
02Destination

VPN connects, website still blocked

The VPN shows connected, but the destination remains unavailable.

The destination may block one VPN IP or use browser, app, account or device signals.
FIRST CHECKS
  • Another server in the same country
  • A private browser window
  • Restart the app or browser
  • Check account and location rules
03Network

Works on mobile data, not Wi-Fi

The connection succeeds elsewhere but fails on one local network.

A captive portal, firewall or protocol restriction may be interfering.
FIRST CHECKS
  • Complete the captive portal login
  • Try another protocol
  • Try another current server
  • Compare mobile data again
04Device signals

App still knows my location

The app reports the previous or account country after the VPN connects.

GPS, permissions, SIM, app-store, account region or cached state can still matter.
FIRST CHECKS
  • Review app location permissions
  • Test the web version if available
  • Restart after connecting
  • Check account settings
05Stability

VPN is slow or disconnects

The connection is unstable, slow or drops during use.

Distance, unstable Wi-Fi, network switching or client/protocol behavior may be involved.
FIRST CHECKS
  • Choose a nearby server
  • Use a stable network
  • Try another supported protocol
  • Restart the VPN client

First response

Try these checks first.

Work in order and note where the result changes. That makes the cause easier to isolate.

  1. 01

    Confirm the VPN is connected

Check the client status before troubleshooting the destination.

  2. 02

Try another server in the same country

One VPN server IP may be blocked while another works.

  3. 03

    Restart the browser or app

Reconnect first, then fully close and reopen the destination.

  4. 04

Use a fresh private browser session

This reduces the effect of old cookies and session state.

  5. 05

    Compare Wi-Fi and mobile data

A difference points toward the original local network.

  6. 06

    Try another supported VPN protocol

Availability varies by client, device and platform.

  7. 07

    Check relevant location permissions

Mobile apps may use GPS or device-level location signals.

  8. 08

    Record the exact error

Keep the wording, time and affected app or site for Support.

Server troubleshooting

Try another server before changing countries.

A single VPN server IP may be blocked by a destination while another server in the same country works normally.

  1. Current server
  2. Another server in the same country
  3. Another supported protocol
  4. Another network
  5. Only then consider another country where appropriate

Connection options

Try another connection option.

Protocol and connection-option availability varies by client, platform and server. Do not assume every individual server exposes every protocol.

RECOMMENDED START

WireGuard

Modern recommended starting option.

SUPPORTED

IKEv2/IPsec

A supported option that can be useful around network changes where appropriate.

RESTRICTIVE NETWORK

Stealth

Available on supported desktop VPNclient applications where ordinary VPN traffic may be interfered with.

LEGACY COMPATIBILITY

L2TP/IPsec and PPTP are retained for compatibility, not recommended as the normal troubleshooting default.

Beyond the VPN IP

VPN connected, but the site or app still knows where you are?

A VPN changes network routing and the public VPN IP. A destination may also consider account, device, browser or platform information.

SignalWhy it may matterWhat to check
Cookies / session

A destination may remember a previous region or login state.

Try a private session or clear data for that destination.

GPS / device location

An app may use location permission instead of relying only on IP.

Review permissions and test the web version if available.

Account country

Signup or profile information can establish an account region.

Review the provider’s account settings and rules.

Payment / billing region

Some services may compare payment region with account or IP information.

Do not assume VPN location changes billing eligibility.

App-store region

The installed app or available catalogue may follow the store account region.

Check the Apple or Google account region where relevant.

SIM / phone verification

A provider may use phone-country or verification information.

Review the service’s supported-country and verification rules.

VPN-IP detection

A destination may identify and block a particular VPN server IP.

Try another current server in the same country.

Browser / device signals

A destination can use additional browser or device information.

Restart, test a clean session and follow the provider’s rules.

Network comparison

Works elsewhere but not on this Wi-Fi?

Hotel, airport, public, school, workplace, apartment or restrictive networks may use captive portals, firewalls or filtering that interferes with VPN traffic.

  • VPN works on mobile data
  • VPN fails only on one Wi-Fi
  • One protocol fails
  • The captive portal was not completed
NETWORK-SPECIFIC ISSUEMANUAL CHECK
  1. 01Complete captive portal / login
  2. 02Reconnect the VPN
  3. 03Try another current server
  4. 04Try another supported protocol or client option
  5. 05Compare mobile data
  6. 06Try Stealth on a supported desktop client where relevant

Stealth is an available troubleshooting option, not a guarantee that every network will allow the connection.

DNS symptoms

Could DNS be part of the problem?

A mismatch between the VPN connection and DNS resolution can create confusing location or access behavior. It is one possible cause, not a diagnosis by itself.

  • Reconnect the VPN
  • Restart the browser or app
  • Compare another network
  • Try another current server
Use these comparisons before treating DNS as the cause.

Realistic limits

When another server will not solve it.

A VPN cannot guarantee changes to:

  • Account country
  • Billing or payment region
  • KYC or age requirements
  • App-store region
  • GPS or device signals
  • Provider availability
  • Licensing or platform terms
  • Local law

Support handoff

Still not working? Send the details that matter.

Clear comparison results help distinguish a server, protocol, network, destination or account-rule problem.

SEND THESE DETAILS
  • Device and operating system
  • Current country and network type
  • Server hostname or location
  • Protocol or client option, if known
  • Website or app affected
  • Exact error message
  • Results from another server
  • Results from another network
  • Screenshot where useful

VPN troubleshooting FAQ

Answers for the next check.

Start with the visible symptom, change one variable and keep the exact error if the issue remains.

Why is my VPN connected but websites are still blocked?

The destination may block one VPN server IP, retain an old browser session, or consider account, device or location signals beyond the visible IP address. Try another current server in the same country, restart the destination and test a private browser session.

Why will my VPN not connect?

Verify the supplied VPN account details, try another current server, try another supported protocol or client option, and compare another network. The exact error and the point at which the connection fails are useful for Support.

Why does the VPN work on mobile data but not Wi-Fi?

The Wi-Fi may require a captive-portal login or may restrict a protocol, port or VPN traffic. Complete the Wi-Fi login, reconnect, try another server or supported protocol, and compare mobile data again.

Which server should I try first?

Start with a nearby current server for general use. If a destination requires a particular visible country, try another current server in that same country before changing countries.

Should I switch VPN protocols?

Yes, when the client or platform provides another supported option. Start with WireGuard, then consider OpenVPN or IKEv2/IPsec as appropriate. Stealth is available on supported desktop VPNclient applications.

Why does an app still know my country?

An app may use GPS, device permissions, SIM, app-store region, account country, billing information or cached state. A VPN changes network routing and the visible VPN IP, not every signal on the device or account.

Can DNS cause VPN problems?

A mismatch between the VPN connection and DNS resolution can contribute to confusing access or location behavior. Reconnect, restart the app or browser, compare another network and try another current server.

Why does streaming detect the VPN?

A streaming service may identify a VPN server IP or enforce account, payment, app-store and licensing rules. Another server in the same country may help, but a VPN cannot guarantee access to a service or catalogue.

What should I send Support?

Send the device and OS, current country, network type, server hostname or location, protocol or client option if known, affected destination, exact error, comparison results from another server or network, and a screenshot where useful. Never send a VPN password, full payment-card details, private keys or seed phrases.
