Using a USA VPN in the USA

American VPNA USA VPN server can be very helpful in unblocking restricted websites in other countries, accessing local news and television programming abroad, and streaming media from Netflix. Truthfully, this is the reason many people use a US-based server. More and more individuals, however, are beginning to appreciate the benefits of using a VPN in the US.

VPN’s provide much more than just a way to evade geographical blocks by changing your IP address. Chief among these added benefits are the layers of security a USA VPN provides.

Who is watching you online?

When George Orwell wrote 1984, his futuristic novel about an oppressive totalitarian government, he knew nothing about the Internet. He would probably be very surprised to find that the Internet has begun to typify the restriction of freedom described in the book.

Those who surfed the Internet back in its infancy during the early to middle 1990’s will recall a Wild West atmosphere online. People tossed around personal information and surfed websites without any concern over who could be observing their activities. All of that has changed today.

Whenever you surf the Internet on an unsecured connection, like the ones you will find at the coffee shop or a hotel, your data is potentially being exposed to a plethora of individuals. The reasons for snooping online activity are as varied as those who do the snooping. At this very moment your browsing could be being tracked by:

  • The government. Four hijacked planes and a handful of boxcutters changed the entire world on 9/11. Since that time, the government has invested millions of dollars into elaborate monitoring programs that are designed to snoop Internet and mobile phone activity.
  • Your spouse. Internet love affairs have become one of the primary reasons for divorce throughout the world, and even spouses who have nothing to be concerned about are snooping the email and text messages of their partners because this has become such a part of the current culture.
  • Data thieves. They have gotten smarter and more ruthless as Wi-Fi hotspots have popped up across the US. See that guy in the suit sitting on the other side of the coffee shop? He could be stealing your data right this minute if your are using unsecured Wi-Fi.

Stopping the snoopers when surfing the web

How do you beat the snoopers? Your USA VPN can help you do that by encrypting your browsing session. A VPN allows you to become somewhat invisible online. You can move among the highways of cyberspace largely undetected when using a VPN like a cyberghost.

Encryption is deadly to a snoop. It basically transforms all of the data you send back and forth across the network into a string of random gibberish. When a snoop encounters an encrypted connection, their only option is to find another target.

Safety-conscious people are beginning to understand that using a VPN at home is just as beneficial as using one abroad. Buy your VPN account today to be protected.

My HBO GO Wont Load

watch HBO GO outside USAMany HBO GO users are surprised to encounter the following message whenever they try to log into their account outside of the United States:

“An internet connection is needed to access the HBO GO app please try again”.

This message is actually a wording glitch. A lack of Internet service is not the problem here. The problem is that the HBO GO app is unavailable outside of the US. Alternatively you may get the message in the image on the left “To access HBO GO, you must reside within the fifty states of the United States of America”

This is a significant issue when you consider the popularity of the HBO GO app. Over one millions downloads of popular HBO programming have been delivered to the devices of HBO subscribers, and that number continues to grow. The only downside is that you must be an HBO subscriber through a cable or satellite service to gain usage of the app.

Geared toward mobile phones and tablets

HBO GO has grown in direct proportion to the popularity of smartphones and tablets which use the Android and iOS operating system. Users can essentially take their HBO subscription everywhere they go, hence the name of the app. Everywhere except outside of the US, that is.

If you travel a lot, the only way to get value out of your HBO subscription is to use the HBO GO app. This is especially true for expats who spend months at a time working in foreign locales. Thankfully, the current technology for phones and tablets provides for VPN connections, something you will need to use of you want to unblock HBO GO. We’ll get to that shortly, but first let’s take a look at some of the exclusive programming available on the app.

Top downloads for HBO GO

Any program that is available on HBO can be accessed via the HBO GO app. HBO has long been a leader in premium television service, and today they offer some excellent original programming in addition to the movies and sports events that have always been a staple of the network. Here’s a short list of some of the most popular GO downloads.

  • HBO Championship Boxing—HBO has televised some of the greatest boxing events in the sport’s history. Most recently the network provided exclusive coverage of the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez battle. New matches are available almost every week.
  • Original Series—Led by its critically-acclaimed Game of Thrones, HBO maintains a schedule of original programming including True Blood, Girls, and Boardwalk Empire. In addition, some of HBO’s classic series like The Sopranos can be accessed with the HBO GO app.
  • Movies—One doesn’t have to wait very long for first-run movies to make their way to HBO, and these are available for streaming on the go.

An HBO subscription combined with the HBO GO app can provide enough entertainment for anyone who enjoys television and film, and when you add in the sporting events and exclusive music concerts this app is a must-have for your Android or iPhone.

Why is HBO GO blocked outside of the US?

There are a couple of reasons. First of all, you need to have an existing HBO subscription to use the app and HBO is available primarily in the US. Secondly, copyright restrictions prevent the streaming of some media in various parts of the world which are known for pirating digital content.

It is a shame that we live in a world where such restrictions have become necessary in order to safeguard the intellectual property of artists and performers. Even so, those restrictions shouldn’t be passed on the someone who has legal access to the app. In our opinion, you shouldn’t have to forfeit your HBO GO if you happen to leave the US on business or pleasure. After all, you pay for it.

Okay, how do I unblock HBO GO and use it outside the US?

Unblocking HBO GO is the simplest process you can imagine. It requires an Internet-ready device such as your smartphone or tablet and a VPN account. There are no special downloads required to use a VPN on your device.

The current generation of computers, smartphones, and tablets are all equipped with a VPN client. What you will need are the credentials and setup information supplied by the VPN provider. Entering the information and configuring your VPN only takes a minute or so and you can connect immediately. Be sure your provider offers a US server option, just like we do at VPN-accounts.com. That’s the server you will need to use to connect. Once your VPN is connected, simply log in to your HBO GO app and enjoy the entertainment.

The reason a VPN is the most effective solution for unblocking the HBO app is that your download speeds will be virtually the same as your regular internet connection. This is why proxy servers are a bad choice for unblocking any app which involves streaming media. The speed of a proxy is just too slow for effective streaming.

How to Access Pandora Outside the US

pandora using a vpnMusic lovers are very familiar with Pandora, the Internet radio application that allows users to choose from hundreds of music stations. Unfortunately, Pandora content is only available in the US, Australia, and New Zealand.

Not to worry, though, because a VPN can remove Pandora restrictions in almost every case. We will tell you how to unblock Pandora with a VPN, but first let’s take a brief look at Pandora and what it offers.

The History of Pandora

Pandora can actually be classified as a music recommendation service, providing content based on user’s unique preferences. Pandora also oversees the Music Genome Project.

The service was launched on July 1st, 2005, the brainchild of Tim Westergren, and immediately became popular due to its interactive nature. Users can choose from a list of genre stations, listen to the stations created by others, or basically let Pandora program their own station based on their listening preferences. The Pandora application is very intuitive; it uses a complex algorithm to identify patterns in the songs chosen by a listener. The software then uses the information it has gleaned to choose what the user will hear in the future.

You could really think of Pandora as SmartRadio, and it has indeed become widely available on Android and iOS devices as well as offered by Dish TV in their satellite television packages. Pandora states that over 200 million people use the service, 70 million of them on a regular basis. A large number of these people are accessing Pandora on a mobile device. Mobile users are limited to 40 hours each month of free content. Subscription packages are offered for those who require more listening time.

In the coming months, Pandora intends to introduce a new interface that will allow users to request a song instantly, and also provide toll free click-to-call ordering of front-row concert tickets. Beginning in September of 2013, Pandora also began to offer on-demand access to the late Kidd Kraddick’s radio program. Kraddick was one of the most popular radio hosts in the US until his untimely death earlier this year.

IP filtering and Pandora

As great as Pandora is, there is one significant drawback to the service. Because of a need to remain compliant with the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act), Pandora is only served to users in the US, Australia, and New Zealand. The DMCA was created to prevent content from being distributed in areas which are known to be hotbeds of illegal file sharing. The DMCA does help protect artists and guarantee they receive royalties, but the downside is that expats and travelers often find Pandora unavailable when they are away from home.

When the service first launched, Pandora loosely enforced their restrictions by requiring a user to enter a zip code at the time of registration. As a rule, requiring a registration like this can accomplish a certain amount of restriction, but the process is easily circumvented by individuals who simply enter a bogus zip code. Since this method of filtering wasn’t working as well as Pandora hoped, on May 3, 2007, the service began to use IP address filtering to restrict delivery of its content.

Restriction based on IP address is actually used by many services to prevent access from certain geographical locations. Netflix, Hulu, and BBC iPlayer are only available in the US and UK, respectively, and all of them accomplish restriction by IP address filtering.

How you can spoof an IP filter with a VPN and unblock Pandora

The solution to evading an IP filter is pretty simple when you think about it—you need to change your IP address. One of the methods you’ll see suggested in regards to Pandora is using a web-based proxy server. This sounds like a good idea. After all, many proxy servers are free. The person who chooses to use one to stream Pandora will soon find out that proxy servers are insufficient. Most, if not all, of them cannot deliver the speed necessary to stream media.

A VPN account is a much better option than a proxy server, and it comes with a few added benefits. For starters, there is no noticeable difference in connection speed. You will get virtually the same download speed with our VPN as you do with your regular connection. You’ll also benefit from the added security a VPN offers.

You might be wondering if using a VPN to unblock Pandora is a difficult process. Nothing could be easier. Just buy a vpn & configure the US VPN server with the instructions we provide, connect to the Internet, connect to your US-based VPN, and log in to Pandora. That’s all it takes to unblock Pandora in areas outside of the US, Australia, and New Zealand. The technology works because Pandora will identify the VPN server address as your physical location.

Create your Own Expat Shield

expats vpnExpatriates are in the fortunate position of being able to travel the world. As you can imagine, being an expat has many advantages, the chief one being the opportunity to experience other cultures and society while retaining a connection to one’s homeland. Working expats also benefit from in-demand job markets that compensate foreign workers handsomely.

There are, however, some disadvantages to being an expatriate. One of the most common complaints from expats is the restrictions placed on Internet access by many countries. These restrictions make it necessary for expats to create their own expat shield by using a VPN.

Expat Internet challenges

In the present age of digital communications, Internet access has become a primary way for individuals to stay connected with their family and friends. You probably use a variety of applications like Skype and Twitter to manage your social obligations. Expats are no different, but using these services is even more important for them because these applications offer the most affordable means of communication.

The problem is that many countries actively restrict Internet access to Web 2.0 services. This is especially true in the Arab regions and China. An expat in these locations will encounter numerous difficulties in using the very services that the ordinary citizen takes for granted.

There is also the matter of obtaining local news and television programming while traveling. This can be difficult to accomplish for expats without the use of a VPN. It is a comfort when working abroad to know what is going on at home. One example is British expats abroad wanting to watch BBC iplayer, using the VPN they overcome geographic blocks.

The challenges posed by Internet restriction and censorship are of a primary concern to expatriates, and these are things the expat should consider before packing those bags to head overseas. An expat shield is just as vital as a passport.

What is an expat shield?

An expat shield is simply another name for a VPN. When you think of a shield, what comes to mind? Protection is likely the first thing one thinks of, and that is exactly what the VPN offers. Traveling to foreign countries presents its own unique set of security challenges, and one of these is the unreliability of foreign ISP’s.

Many countries heavily monitor ISP’s in order to spy on the browsing of Web surfers. In the Arab region, many ISP’s are state-owned, thus giving the government an inordinate amount of control over what can be accessed online. It is hard to have complete faith in the security of personal data where many foreign ISP’s are concerned. An expat’s personal data can be easily exposed over an unencrypted connection. So, the first thing a VPN does is increase the security of personal data. The shield itself is called a tunnel, and all information passing through that tunnel is secured by complex encryption.

In addition, that VPN shield clears the way for unrestricted Internet access. Many blocked websites can be accessed by using the VPN server, which helps to conceal the physical location of the user. If, for example, you want to use your Netflix account to stream a movie, Netflix needs to know that you are in the United States. Your IP address will give that information to Netflix. If you are accessing the Internet via a foreign ISP, that creates a problem. Resolving the problem is as simple as connecting to your US-based VPN server.

Is it hard to set up a shield for expats?

Nothing could be easier from a technological standpoint. All modern Internet-ready devices are pre-loaded with a VPN client that only requires you to enter the network credentials supplied by your administrator. You won’t have to download anything special, and no changes are made to your computer’s hardware when you set up a VPN.

One problem that some expats do encounter in setting up their shield is waiting too long to purchase VPN service. In many cases, trying to purchase VPN access is impossible once an expat arrives in a foreign country because these countries block VPN providers. The smart expat will purchase and configure their VPN before leaving their home country.

An added benefit for expats

A great advantage of using a VPN to create an expat shield is that the VPN can also be used when the traveler returns home again. Although the user might not need to unblock websites in their home country, they can still take comfort in knowing that their data transfer is secured.

This is important because so many people today regularly connect to unsecured public networks in their home country. From coffee shop hotspots to hotel Wi-Fi, unsecured networks are a prime target of data thieves and hackers. Each time you use them your data is potentially at risk.

VPN-accounts.com has helped many expats successfully set up a VPN shield, and we can do the same for you. Don’t put this important travel task off until the last minute.

Why do you Need Multiple VPN Server Locations?

VPN serverIf you’re reading this then you are probably already one of our many satisfied VPN account holders. Or, maybe you are trying to find the right VPN provider for your needs. In your search for VPN service you will encounter a lot of companies that make a lot of promises, so it is important that you use some due diligence and choose your provider wisely.

One of the things you need to heavily consider is the number of server options that come with your VPN account. As you will see, VPN-accounts.com offers multiple server options to our users. There is no need to purchase access to individual servers. We make them all available to you for one affordable price.

What are VPN server options?

A VPN connection is established through a special VPN server that is located in a specific geographical area. Whenever you connect to the VPN, your IP address becomes that of the VPN server. This means that your actual physical location becomes masked by the physical location of the VPN server. If you are browsing from the United States and connect to a VPN server in the UK, it will appear that you are accessing the Internet from the United Kingdom. If you happen to be an expat in China and connect to the VPN server in the US, your physical location will appear to be in the States.

There are many articles on our website which discuss how geo-restriction is used to block access to certain websites in certain countries. Your VPN server options give you added flexibility in avoiding these geo blocks by providing multiple locations for you to choose from.

More servers are important for Expats

Are you one of those fortunate people who are able to work in various locations around the globe? Perhaps your business finds you often shuttling between the UK and the Arab Region. Maybe you find it necessary to make multiple trips outside of your home country each year. As an expatriate, you want to make sure that your VPN service opens up the entire Internet to you wherever you may roam.

VPNaccounts has implemented multiple servers in order to cater to a wide number of expats and foreign travelers. Our server options are perfect for reporters who must travel on a moment’s notice, oil industry workers who visit several nations each year, or even service organization volunteers who never know where their latest assignment will take them. Businessmen and women are often compelled to travel many different locales, and we have them covered.

Different countries take different approaches to which Internet content they restrict. You may find it necessary to view the BBC iPlayer in one context or use Amazon Prime to stream a television program in another. With multiple server options, the entire Internet opens up to you regardless of where you happen to be.

VPNaccounts.com server options

Here are the VPN server options we currently have in place to meet your VPN needs:

  • United States—Great for using your Netflix and Hulu accounts abroad.
  • United Kingdom—Frees up your access to iPlayer and other BBC content.
  • CanadaRemove the restriction on CBC Player content and get local news and programming from your homeland.
  • Germany—An excellent choice for those who like to browse anonymously.
  • Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Singapore, Switzerland—more great choices for individuals who hail from these locales.

We also are always taking into account the needs of our VPN customers. If you require a specific server option for your VPN that you do not see listed above, we are always open to your suggestions. You can feel free to request a new server location. If the demand for a VPN server in this location is present, we will make every effort to add it to our list of VPN server options.

Don’t get locked in to limited VPN choices

Before you make that commitment of purchasing a VPN account, ask the VPN service provider how many server options they offer. You will likely find that many of the VPN services out there charge more than we do for fewer server options. Some of them only offer servers within one country. While this can be useful in a limited context for those who simply want to browse anonymously at home, it won’t work for many people.

In addition, using multiple servers to make your VPN connection makes your Internet activities more difficult to monitor and track. With all of the recent news about Internet surveillance, the wise choice is to use a variety of servers to Web surf.

Each of our server options offers the highest levels of data encryption. Whichever of our VPN servers you use to connect, you can be certain that your data is protected at all times. Get a VPN, we have over 43 location to connect to!

Unblock Todou Videos Outside China using a VPN

Have you heard of Todou? Todou is one of the largest video sharing sites on the Internet. From its base in China, Todou serves more than 7 million requests each day for its video content, making it responsible for more than 50% of the video web traffic in a highly restrictive country. While the Chinese government strictly monitors and censors Todou through its notorious firewall program aimed at quelling government criticism, Todou users still enjoy a fair amount of freedom in what they can post and what they can watch.

Chinese nationals who find themselves visiting other countries, however, will note that Todou is blocked outside of China. A VPN offers these individuals a way to access Todou and provides an added benefit that we will discuss a little later.

The History of Todou Video Sharing website

Todou is basically the Chinese version of YouTube. Users can watch videos and can even upload their own videos with an account. Todou was launched in April of 2005 and rapidly became one of the world’s largest users of bandwidth. The site claims to use about 1 Petabyte per day to satisfy its 7 million users. The name Todou literally translates to “Potato Net”, a play upon the couch potato theme.

The venture was started on a shoestring by Gary Wang and Marc van der Chijs, who always envisioned the site as a YouTube clone with an emphasis on video blogging. At the present time, video bloggers still account for a large number of Todou users.

YouTube serves a larger number of videos each day, but Todou videos are typically longer than ones found on YouTube. Todou videos are offered via Adobe Flash technology, but there are technological advances on the horizon for this growing Web company.

Todou Content you could be watching with a VPN

The primary content one will find on Todou can usually be placed in one of the following categories:

  • Music Videos
  • Movie Clips
  • TV show clips
  • Video blogging

One of the things that make Todou so appealing to Chinese citizens is that the government does allow some latitude in what can be shared on the site. Granted, criticism of Chinese politics is still off limits, but tongue-in-cheek humor is allowed. You’ll find many of the same types of funny and viral videos you can find on YouTube.

Using a VPN to unblock Todou outside China

As we mentioned, Todou is blocked outside of China. This is due mainly to copyright restrictions and the government’s desire to decide what parts of Chinese culture the rest of the world has access to. This can be a problem for the large number of Chinese nationals who are residing in places like the US and UK.

A large number of Chinese residents attend universities in the US or UK. Being able to watch Todou videos helps them feel connected to their home country. It is possible to restore Todou access with a VPN if the VPN provider you use has a server based in China. To view the site, you will need to sign on the Chinese server provided by your VPN host.

The really great thing is that Chinese residents who purchase a VPN to watch Todou in the US or UK receive an added benefit. Because of the multiple server options provided, the VPN can be used when these individuals return to China to unblock many sites restricted in their homeland. All they have to do is select a different server option and they are good to go.

This added benefit makes a VPN a wise choice for any Chinese resident who lives or works for a time in the US or UK. It is important that the VPN be purchased while visiting the West, because many VPN provider websites are restricted in China.

VPN’s are a must for Chinese citizens Abroad

Many expected the strict regulation of the Internet in China to be a passing concern, but in recent months the Chinese government has stepped up their censorship of digital media. Many Internet watchdog organizations have listed China as the world leader in Internet censorship. There have even been arrests within the country of those who publish controversial blogs.

The average Chinese citizen is much like the residents of less-restrictive nations. They want to be able to access all of the content the Internet has to offer without restriction. More and more people from China are using a VPN to regain their Internet freedom. Do the same, buy a vpn account today!

Thanks to VPNaccounts and the multiple vpn server options we offer, those who live in China as well as the large number of expats who work there can evade the Great Firewall of China and stay connected. It is estimated that the number of VPN users will grow substantially in the coming year as more people realize the benefits of using this technology at home and abroad. Using a VPN with a Smart TV

vpn for smart tvMore and more people are turning to a different kind of technology to stream media from the Internet—the Smart TV. Using a Smart TV to stream media provides a more realistic entertainment experience on a bigger screen. It is no stretch to envision a time when Smart TV’s will become preferred over DVD media as more and more content is delivered via the Internet.

What many people don’t realize is that Smart TV’s are subject to the same security and restriction concerns as any other Internet-ready device. Combining a VPN with your Smart TV is an intelligent way to avoid many of these problems.

The Evolution of the Smart TV

The Smart TV, also known as the Connected TV or Hybrid TV, has come a long way since it was patented in 1994. The technology has improved and the cost of a Smart TV has come down, making the device more accessible to more people.

Smart TV’s were developed in order to integrate Web 2.0 services, including social media and streaming media, with general television viewing. You will find the same technology used by Smart TV’s in many “set-top” devices like the converters used by satellite companies and also in popular gaming consoles like the Playstation 4 and the Xbox 360. What the technology primarily does is allow viewers to search the Web for on-demand movies and television programs from providers like Dish Network and Direct TV, and users also have the capability to save media to an internal storage device.

By definition, Smart TV’s are television sets integrated with Internet capabilities or a set-top box that enables greater connectivity and computing ability than a regular television set.

At the present time, about 12 million US households actively use a Smart TV, while another 25 million own sets that are capable of Internet connectivity. By 2016, studies project that 100 million homes in North America and Western Europe will be actively using a Smart TV.

Why use a VPN with a Smart TV?

Without a doubt, the Smart TV is a nifty concept. What users need to remember is that because the Smart TV is an Internet-connected device, content delivered via the Smart TV is subject to the same restrictions as content accessed with a laptop or desktop computer.

What this means is that Smart TV users outside of the US cannot access Netflix or Hulu on their Smart TV. Those outside of the UK will encounter the same difficulty with the BBC iPlayer. Even those who live in the United States will can encounter restrictions, especially in the streaming of sporting events. Local market blackouts are widely used by all major sporting leagues like the NFL, NBA, and MLB.

In addition, Smart TV’s are also subject to the same security concerns as any other device. Streaming media and accessing the Web without some type of encryption can put your device at risk for harmful malware, spyware, and also expose your sensitive data to prying eyes.

Unrestricted access and improved security are the primary reasons why you need to consider using a VPN with your Smart TV. It might sound complicated to set up and configure, but the truth is that setting up a VPN on your Smart TV is a simple process. We sell many VPN accounts, come get yours!

Setting up a VPN on your Smart TV

The first step is to purchase your VPN access from VPNaccounts.com. We’ll provide all of the information you need to get started. Next, you’re going to need a special flashed router that will enable the configuration of the VPN on your Smart TV. You can get one at a very reasonable price from www.dd-routers.com.

The flashed router allows you to share the VPN connection between your computer and your Smart TV. It also provides an “always-on” capability for your VPN connection so that you can keep your TV connected. Simple instructions are provided with a flash router, and we are happy to help with any questions you may have regarding configuration. To get started click here to buy a VPN.

Something else to consider: you need to use the PPTP VPN protocol with your Smart TV. In some countries that heavily restrict Internet access, the PPTP protocol can be unstable. Please feel free to contact us for advice in using the PPTP protocol.

VPNaccounts.com does not place restrictions on your bandwidth, and the connection speed you will enjoy is virtually the same as your normal Internet connection. This is important because streaming media requires bandwidth and speed.

Once you have all of the necessary element assembled…your Smart TV, your VPN account, and your router…simply follow the directions provided to enable VPN connectivity on your device. Most Smart TV’s make the process easy by using a menu that will walk you through the process step-by-step. We want to stress again that we will help you to the best of our ability should you encounter any difficulties.

Unblock Amazon Prime Outside the US with a VPN

amazon prime with vpnAmazon is the largest online retailer in the world, but many people do not know that Amazon has also begun to establish dominance when it comes to streaming media through its Amazon Prime service. Amazon Prime allows users to stream thousands of movies and television shows at no cost, making the service a valid competitor to other sites like Netflix.

Having an Amazon prime membership is great, but at the present time there are many limitations placed on the service outside of the United States. It is possible to unblock Amazon Prime outside of the US with a VPN and a few simple clicks.

What is Amazon Prime?

Amazon Prime is a membership-based service which provides many benefits to Amazon users. For an affordable yearly fee, Prime members can enjoy free two-day shipping on most items purchased from Amazon. The big benefit, however, is free access to Amazon’s massive library of digital content.

Amazon Prime members can stream many movies and television shows for free. If you enjoy watching television and films, a Prime membership can easily pay for itself in a very short period of time. Digital content from Amazon Prime can be streamed to a variety of devices including computers, tablets, Smart TV’s and even smartphones that run on the iOS or Android Platform. Users can also purchase new releases for a nominal cost and even create customized viewing schedules. All of this flexibility is driving more people to use the Amazon Prime service.

Unfortunately, there is one small glitch with the Prime service. Most of the digital media which can be streamed is not available to Amazon members outside of the United States.

Why is Amazon Prime blocked outside of the US?

The main reason streaming media with Amazon Prime is not allowed outside of the US is copyright issues. Some countries are not allowed to access digital content due to copyright restrictions put in place by major studios. In the past, copyright infringement has been a serious problem in other countries. File sharing in many countries is very hard to monitor, and studios want to ensure they are receiving the proper royalties for their digital content.  In addition, some countries block media services as a part of their effort to monitor and control what is accessed on the Internet.

This is especially bad news for expats and travelers from the US who depend upon their Amazon Prime account to provide them with access to digital media. There seems to be little point in paying for the benefits of Prime if you don’t use the streaming service.

How is Amazon Prime blocked?

To guarantee that restricted media cannot be viewed outside of the United States, Amazon Prime utilizes geo-restriction which uses an IP address as an identifier. A user’s IP address can reveal the location where digital media is being accessed. If that location is revealed to be outside of the US, access to Prime streaming is restricted.

It is interesting to note here that Amazon is a service which requires registration. A user has to sign up for an account, a process which requires providing an email address and also a mailing address for shipments received from Amazon. Why then, if Amazon knows that you live in the US, do they block Prime videos when you try to access them from other countries?

The answer is that the restriction on Amazon’s digital media is based on your present location, not the location you used to register the account. Amazon realizes that its members travel. Therefore, in addition to having your registration information on hand, your IP address is also checked when you login. Just because you registered an account in the United States does not mean you will be able to access streaming media with Amazon Prime if you happen to be in Germany. In that country, and many others, you cannot stream media with Amazon Prime.

Taking the chains off of Amazon Prime to watch it outside the US

Unblocking Amazon Prime is a fairly simple process. You need to have a VPN account with a provider who offers a US-based server. We include a US-based VPN server among our 43 plus server options. Once your account is configured, you simply sign on to the US-based server when you are out of the country before accessing your Prime membership. This will restore your streaming media privileges no matter where you happen to be.

In many cases, individuals don’t realize they are going to need a VPN to unblock Amazon Prime until they reach their travel destination. That can be too late because some countries, like China, block access to VPN provider websites. We strongly recommend that you set up your own personal VPN account before leaving the United States to avoid difficulty with obtaining a VPN.

VPN vs Proxy Server – What to use?

vpn and proxyThere is a pretty significant debate in the technological community about which type of service is more effective at preserving anonymity online, a VPN or a Proxy Server. Without all of the facts, it is hard to decide which type of service to use if you want to remain anonymous online or access blocked services. In the interest of helping you make an informed decision, here are some things you need to know about VPN’s versus Proxy Servers.

What is a Proxy Server?

A proxy is simply a computer that becomes an intermediary between the Internet and your computer. In this regard, a proxy is somewhat effective at concealing your IP address and enabling anonymity online, but beyond that the differences between a proxy server and a VPN become more pronounced.

Specifically, proxy servers use a different type of protocol to manage their traffic. The protocols used by proxy servers are HTTP or SOCKS.

It is likely that you will encounter the HTTP variety of protocol when using a proxy server. This type of protocol is only viable for accessing websites that begin with the https:// or https:// designation. In other words, this protocol can handle traffic to web pages on the Internet. Due to its limited functionality, a proxy server with HTTP protocol has some ability to mask your IP address and provide a level of anonymity online.

The SOCKS protocol is a little more diverse in what it can handle, offering the user an ability to use FTP, IRC chat, and POP3 for email communication.

In both cases, there can be a glaring omission in terms of security. VPN’s use much more sophisticated protocols which encrypt network traffic. Therefore, not only does a VPN account  give you a level of anonymity when browsing the Internet, it also makes your data impossible to read. This is a significant difference and one that many proxy users don’t fully understand. Changing your IP address is fine, but without complex encryption like that which is offered by a VPN a user’s security is still compromised.

The Pros and Cons of Proxy Servers

If you want to get into the advantages and disadvantages of a proxy server, there are really only two that you need to be aware of: cost and speed.

Yes, it is true that many proxy servers can be used for free. In some way, this could be considered an advantage. But is it really? When it comes to proxy servers, you definitely get what you pay for. Always keep in mind that free services depend on some manner of income for their continued existence. This means of revenue can often come in the form of ads containing malware or browsing data being sold to marketing companies. You are basically trusting the owner of a free server with your sensitive data, and in most cases have no idea how that data is being monitored or used. Web-based proxies are the absolute worst offenders in this regard. Not only do they pummel users with a stream of advertisements, many of them cannot support technology like Flash or Java. You will also discover that many Web-based proxy servers have become useless because they are recognized and blocked.

The big disadvantage of a proxy server is that connections can often be very slow. Welcome to the World Wide Wait. The protocols used by proxy servers just aren’t conducive to speed, and this makes a proxy server impractical for streaming media services like Netflix or BBC iPlayer. In addition, proxy servers are notorious for dropping connections on a whim. You can be surfing on the proxy one minute and totally exposed the next.

Why VPN’s are better that a Proxy Server

Let’s begin by addressing that issue of speed. When you use a VPN there is little or no difference between the connection speed of the VPN and a regular high-speed connection.  When you consider that many people are using VPN’s or proxy servers to access blocked services that deliver streaming media, the choice is pretty simple. You need to be able to maintain a connection speed that will allow the fast transmission of data between your device and the Web. A VPN does that.

Next, the security issue must be considered. Most VPN’s use a high level of encryption, which can range from 128-bit to 2048-bit. Encryption technology is also improving all the time, and at VPNaccounts we stay on top of the advances in security in order to insure that you are strongly protected. We do not log your web traffic, not do we sell your data to marketing companies. Our revenues come solely from what you pay for VPN service.

Another reason VPN’s are better is that they do not require multiple configurations. Once you set up your VPN client to connect to the VPN server, it only takes a click to create that connection. Proxy servers can be difficult to manage in this regard.

What about support?

If you happen to find yourself in the position of needing support from the provider of a proxy server, good luck. This goes back to the concept of cost we were mentioning earlier. Free proxy services cannot afford to maintain support staff that will help you when you encounter a problem.

VPNaccounts.com has made every effort to keep your cost at a bare minimum. The small amount we charge for a VPN defers the costs of server upgrades, support staff, and improved security. Whenever you need to contact us, we do our best to respond quickly with a complete solution.

The bottom line on proxy servers

There really is no other way to say this, so we’ll be blunt. If you are serious about maintaining your anonymity online and preserving your security you will choose a VPN over a proxy server each and every time. The small cost of a VPN is minimal when you consider the risks inherent in proxy servers and the reduction in overall connection speed make proxy servers a poor choice.
