Need an OpenVPN Alternative to Mullvad? Check Before Switching

Still need an OpenVPN profile? Check client compatibility, account setup and billing before moving from Mullvad to another VPN provider.

If your device or third-party client still requires OpenVPN, VPN-Accounts.com offers account-specific OpenVPN configurations through its customer dashboard. Check the exact client and device before purchasing: support for OpenVPN is a reason to consider a provider, not proof that every router or older client will work.

This is a provider-written switching guide, not an independent ranking or a claim that VPN-Accounts.com matches every Mullvad feature.

Why consider switching for OpenVPN?

Mullvad’s official announcement set January 15, 2026 as the end of OpenVPN support on its clients and servers, as it focused on WireGuard. It advised users of OpenVPN routers and third-party apps to migrate to WireGuard.

If your device supports WireGuard and that meets your needs, you may not need to change providers. A replacement becomes relevant when you have a specific requirement for an OpenVPN client or profile. Do not switch just because a protocol name is unfamiliar.

Check the device before buying another account

Record the device model, operating system, client version and required configuration format. For routers, check the firmware and whether the device has an OpenVPN client feature; a VPN server feature is a different function.

Ask these questions before paying:

  • Can the client import the provider’s profile and use its authentication method?
  • Is the required location available for that connection method?
  • Does your network permit the intended connection?
  • Which DNS, reconnect and disconnect-protection controls does the client provide?

Send Support the model and client details if compatibility is unclear. Do not include passwords, private keys or unredacted configuration files in a public post.

What VPN-Accounts.com provides

An active account lets you use the customer dashboard to choose an available OpenVPN server and port and generate an account-specific configuration. Import that profile into a compatible client and use the VPN credentials supplied for your account when required.

The service also offers WireGuard configuration. Our OpenVPN account and configuration buying guide explains the distinction between buying access, installing a client and downloading a profile.

An old Mullvad profile cannot be turned into a VPN-Accounts.com profile by replacing the username. Use the new provider’s configuration rather than copying server addresses, certificates or settings between accounts. OpenVPN Connect documents its profile import process.

Compare billing and privacy separately

The monthly subscription costs $7 today, then $7/month until canceled. If you want a fixed period without automatic renewal, prepaid crypto access starts at $7 for one month before applicable payment fees. Crypto checkout requires an email address; it is not an anonymous or email-free purchase.

One account supports up to 10 simultaneous connections on compatible devices. Review the privacy policy and refund conditions instead of assuming that two providers share the same policies, audits or app features. The qualified 30-day money-back guarantee is not a free trial.

Test the replacement before relying on it

  1. Confirm compatibility and choose the access period you need.
  2. Generate a fresh profile from your active account.
  3. Import it into the intended client and connect on your normal network.
  4. Check ordinary browsing, DNS behavior and the client’s response to a disconnection.
  5. Review the old provider’s billing separately; buying a replacement does not cancel another account.

Keep the first test limited to the device and use case that motivated the switch. A working OpenVPN connection does not guarantee access to every streaming platform or restrictive network.
