Accessing WhatsApp Abroad

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps globally, enabling users to send text messages, make voice and video calls, and share files securely. Despite its widespread use, WhatsApp faces restrictions in several countries due to its encryption and potential to circumvent local controls. If you’re traveling abroad and find that WhatsApp is blocked, don’t worry—VPN-Accounts.com has the perfect solution to help you bypass these restrictions and stay connected.

Why WhatsApp Faces Restrictions

Governments impose restrictions on WhatsApp for various reasons. Countries like China and the United Arab Emirates block WhatsApp to control information flow and maintain surveillance. WhatsApp’s strong encryption features pose a challenge to governments that want to monitor communication. Other countries, such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia, have also imposed restrictions due to concerns over VoIP services impacting local telecom revenues or as a measure to control foreign influences.

WhatsApp Restrictions Around the World

Understanding the restrictions on WhatsApp in various countries can help you better prepare for your travels:

  • China: The Great Firewall of China heavily censors internet access, including WhatsApp. The app’s encryption is a significant reason for the block, as it prevents the government from monitoring communications.
  • United Arab Emirates: WhatsApp is restricted in the UAE due to its VoIP services competing with local telecom providers. Users often face difficulties in making calls and sending messages.
  • Qatar: Similar to the UAE, Qatar restricts VoIP services like WhatsApp to control the flow of information and protect local telecom revenues.
  • Saudi Arabia: Although the Saudi government lifted some restrictions on VoIP services, users still face occasional limitations on features like voice and video calls.
  • Other Countries: Countries like Brazil and Turkey have imposed temporary bans on WhatsApp in the past due to legal and political reasons. These restrictions can vary based on local regulations and current events.

Case Studies: Real-Life Experiences

Real-life experiences highlight how VPNs can be invaluable for accessing WhatsApp in restrictive environments. For instance, Sarah, a marketing executive from the US, found herself in China for a business trip. Unable to use WhatsApp to communicate with her team back home due to the country’s ban, she turned to VPN-Accounts.com. By connecting to a server in the US, Sarah was able to use WhatsApp seamlessly, staying in touch with her colleagues and clients without interruption.

Similarly, John, a digital nomad, faced challenges while working remotely in the UAE. WhatsApp, along with other VoIP services, was restricted. Using VPN-Accounts.com, John connected to a server in a country where WhatsApp was accessible. This allowed him to continue his work and personal communications smoothly, demonstrating the practical benefits of VPN services for staying connected despite regional restrictions.

Whatsapp in UAE and Saudi Arabia

VPN for Whatsapp

Whatsapp remains one of the most popular apps for sending messages and making calls. It is widely available throughout the world with a few exceptions. Saudi Arabia and the UAE are two countries that block the use of Whatsapp for calls.

Those who have encountered this block may be able to use a VPN for Whatsapp video call features. Let’s take a look at the Whatsapp VPN solution and how it can restore your access to Whatsapp in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Is WhatsApp Really Unavailable in Dubai and Saudi Arabia?

The block for Whatsapp in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and other areas of the UAE is not a complete ban. The messaging features of Whatsapp are available. It is the ability to make calls that is restricted. Why is this so?

The answer lies in the telecommunications duopoly that exists in the UAE. By government mandate there are only two telecommunications providers that are authorized to provide call service to the country. No other providers are permitted.

This duopoly allows Dubai to exercise some strict control over its telecommunications services. Some would also argue that it also makes it much easier to monitor call service. The ban goes back to 2016 and also affects some other VoIP services like Skype.

In Saudi Arabia the situation can be a little more complex. As recently as 2017 the kingdom relaxed some of its restrictions on VoIP calling services. It has since reverted to a harsher stance.

Using a VPN for Whatsapp Call Features in Saudi Arabia and the UAE

The reason that a Whatsapp block is problematic for many people is that both the UAE and Saudi Arabia host many expats and other foreign visitors. These individuals need a reliable way to contact their relatives at home. VoIP services like Whatsapp offer them an inexpensive option for making costly international calls.

The VPN Whatsapp hack is something most expats know about. If you are someone that has never visited the Dubai or Saudi Arabia, the time to consider a VPN is now. Don’t wait until you arrive in the country because you may find it difficult to access some VPN provider websites.

This is how it works. When you use a VPN to connect to Whatsapp, the app recognizes the VPN server that you are using to determine your location. If you connect to a server in a country where Whatsapp calling is allowed, you will be able to use the app to make calls in Dubai.

Most reputable VPN providers have hundreds of server locations. You can probably find one from your home country. The additional benefit of using a VPN for Whatsapp access is that you also have more security.

VPNs offer an encrypted connection that helps to keep your data safe from prying eyes. You can also use the same VPN to watch your local news content, and a VPN can be used to stream Netflix or other popular media services that may not be available in the places you are visiting.

The Best VPN for Whatsapp Calling in Dubai

There are a few things to consider before you choose a VPN to use with Whatsapp in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. You will want to make sure your chosen VPN ticks all of the boxes we will mention below.

Oh, something else to consider. If you are thinking about using one of the so-called free VPNs, be wary. Many of these VPNs are known to deliver spyware. You could be defeating the very purpose of using a VPN in the first place.

First of all, you need a VPN that has adequate speed to make calls. There can generally be a little drop off in speed when connecting to a VPN but this should be slight. If the speed is too slow, you will experience dropped calls and poor quality.

You also need a VPN that offers plenty of server locations to choose from. You always want to have the most options available.

Finally, your VPN should be committed to your security and privacy. This means using a VPN that does not log your activity.

VPNAccounts offers affordable and reliable VPN service that meets all of these requirements. We encourage you to check out the VPN plans that we offer today.

WhatsApp New Privacy Policy

Whatsapp Privacy

Those who use WhatsApp for instant messaging should be aware that the service has recently announced some changes to its terms and conditions. The new WhatsApp privacy policy for 2021 details which personal information the app collects from users. It also specifies how that data can be used or shared by WhatsApp.

It is common for apps like WhatsApp to change their privacy policy from time to time. Usually, these changes are met with little to no resistance. In the case of the 2021 WhatsApp privacy policy, users expressed concern over the sweeping permissions it gave to Facebook in regards to messages. Many people were quick to delete the app, and Facebook delayed the integration of the new measures until May 2021.

Here’s an effort to help you understand the new WhatsApp privacy policy and how it can affect your use of WhatsApp.

The New Privacy Policy Does Not Target Personal WhatsApp Messages

WhatsApp is owned by Facebook. When the company announced the changes to its privacy policy, some users were concerned that Facebook would now have access to its personal messages. Many people started to use Signal and Telegram after the announcement. It probably didn’t help that Elon Musk started to tweet that there were better alternatives for messaging than WhatsApp.

The backlash from users prompted Facebook to delay the changes to the policy for a few months. This appears to have been an effort at damage control by the social media giant. Facebook was quick to make clear that the new policy did not change privacy settings for personal messages. Those messages will still benefit from WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption.

Messages to and from businesses, however, are included in the new policy. Basically, the new 2021 WhatsApp privacy policy requires users to accept that business messages may be collected and used for marketing purposes. There will be associated information stored on Facebook’s servers.

This is a potential concern for anyone that wants more control of their own Internet security and privacy.

What Will Happen If You Don’t Accept the WhatsApp 2021 Privacy Policy?

It is still possible for users of WhatsApp to choose whether or not they will accept the new privacy policy. They can even continue using the app if they don’t, but their usage will be restricted over time.

WhatsApp will first prompt users to accept the agreement. The ability to send messages from the app will also be restricted. Finally, the refusal of the new privacy policy will lead to the app being disabled for users after 120 days. At that point, the user’s account will be deleted.

Is It Still Safe to Use WhatsApp?

If you are only using WhatsApp to send personal messages, Facebook claims that its service is still encrypted from end-to-end. As such, Facebook wants you to know that WhatsApp is completely safe to use. But is this really true? There have been stories from time to time which appear to cast doubt on the use of the app for truly secure messaging.

What we can say for sure is that your messages with any businesses are not protected. Some would argue that this step will only lead to greater permissions in the future. At best, you should use WhatsApp with diligence and caution.

New Whatsapp Calling Feature Blocked in the UAE

The excitement over the Whatsapp calling feature available now to all Android users of the popular app and soon to be made available for the iOS didn’t last long in the UAE. Etisalat and Du Telecom, the UAE’s primary service providers, have recently announced that the voice calling feature introduced by Whatsapp is blocked in the Emirates.

The popularity of Whatsapp

Whatsapp has found increasing popularity as an app that allows mobile users to message each other without paying for SMS. It is available for the iPhone, Blackberry, Android, and Windows Phone.

Users of the app can message each other, even across different platforms, send pictures and videos, and even create groups chats. Because the app uses the same Internet data plan that mobile users have for email and web browsing, there is no additional charge for using Whatsapp and messages sent with the app are not regarded as SMS.

In order to compete with Skype and similar services, Whatsapp recently introduced its own VoIP voice calling feature that allows users to speak in real time just like making a normal phone call. While initially available on the Android version of the app, Whatsapp plans to make the feature available for the iOS very soon.

The UAE responds quickly to Whatsapp voice calling feature

The major telecom providers in the UAE were quick to respond to the new voice calling feature introduced by Whatsapp and took measures to block it. The use of VoIP call services in the UAE is illegal. Telecom operators are obligated to scramble the services offered by Skype, BBM Voice, Viber, and similar apps. It was anticipated that telecom operators would swiftly drop the hammer on the Whatsapp voice calling feature.

The biggest objection to the use of VoIP services in the UAE seems to be an economical one. The availability of free voice calling to users of Whatsapp and Skype would put a serious dent in the revenues generated by the UAE’s telecom giants. The CEO of Du Telecom recently addressed this aspect in an interview. Osman Sultan stated that Skype in itself is not blocked for PC-to-PC chats and that the telecom providers know UAE residents use it, but that voice calls with Skype are not permitted because the telecom providers must “protect their own huge investments made in providing call services to residents.” This same philosophy led to the blocking of the Whatsapp voice calling feature. more here.

At the present time the feature is unavailable to Du’s mobile customers, although the company has confirmed that the feature is still functioning on some Wi-Fi networks. Etisalat did not offer a comment, but the older of the two companies also functions under the current UAE telecom regulations and is bound by law to restrict the feature.

Sultan went on to say that Du Telecom is looking for ways to implement VoIP services in a way that economically benefits the telecom companies. This seems to be somewhat contradictory to the overall purpose of VoIP services.
