Setting up VPN on Windows 2000 & XP

Windows XPHere you will find the instruction for setting up the VPN connection on your Windows 2000 or XP computer. We begin with the windows 2000 PPTP VPN setup guide. Further down you will find the Windows XP guide followed by the L2TP IPsec VPN guide. Once the PPTP VPN connection is configured, you can return to it and do some changes in order to switch to L2TP IPSEC VPN. Alternatively you can also create two connections. This may be required if you have issues connecting to our service using one protocol.

Windows 2000 PPTP VPN Configuration

  • 1. Double-click on "My Computer" icon on your desktop. Then click on "Control Panel"

  • 2. Once your control panel is open, double click on "Network and Dial Up Connections"

  • 3.Double–click on ‘Make New Connection’. The “Network Connection Wizard” screen will appear. Click "Next" .

  • 4.From the options presenter, select "Connect to a private network through the Internet" and click "Next"

  • 5.You will be asked for a server IP Address. Refer to the Welcome email. Enter the IP address & press "Next"

  • 6.You are asked to set user access. Select "for all users" and click next to continue .

  • 7.You will be asked to "Name the Connection". Name it anything you want (such as VPNaccounts.com PPTP) and press "Finish"

  • 8.Connecting to the VPN: Double click on the connection you created, found in the "Network and Dial-Up Connections" folder

Windows XP PPTP VPN Configuration

  • 1. Open "Networks connection folder" Go to Start & then Control Panel

  • 2.Click on the 'Create a new connection' in the Network Tasks task (top left corner)

  • 3.The Connection wizard will load. Click next and then "Connect to the network at my workplace".

  • 4.Now select "Virtual Private Network" connection, and click 'Next'

  • 5.When asked for "company name" type "VPNaccounts.com" or anything you like and click the 'Next' button

  • 6.On the following stage select the option to 'Do not dial the initial connection' and click the 'Next' button .

  • 7.Enter the Server IP Address provided to you in the welcome email we sent you.

  • 8.Select the 'Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop' check box and click 'Finish'.

  • 9.On your desktop 'double click' on the connection shortcut you created in step 8. Refer to the welcome email we sent you and in the 'User Name' box, enter your username. In the 'Password' box, enter the password. Optionally, click 'Save Password' to save your password as part of the connection. Click connect and you will be connecting using PPTP VPN. To Set up L2TP, click 'Properties'

Windows XP L2TP IPSEC VPN Guide

After following all the steps above and creating the PPTP VPN connection you can modify it to make it an L2TP connection or you can start from the beginning and make the changed on the new connection. This way you will have one PPTP VPN and one L2TP IPSEC VPN.

  • 1.In the VPN properties, click on Options. Uncheck the 'Include Windows logon domain' and click the 'Networking' tab.

  • 2.Under the "Networking" tab, change the 'Type of VPN' from 'Automatic' to 'L2TP IPsec VPN'

  • 3.Now click "Security" tab, It should look the same as the image below. Now click the 'IPsec Setttings...' button. You will enter a pre-shared key which is found in the welcome email we sent you. Enter it and press ok

  • 4.Everything is ready. Double click on the connection on your desktop and enter user data. Refer to the welcome email. Enter username, password and click connect
