using a VPN account on your Android Device

Android VPNAre you one of the millions of people who have chosen the Android operating system for your smartphones and tablets? If so, you may be neglecting the ability to use a VPN on your Android device. Many Android users are simply unaware that their device will support a VPN.

Internet usage is drifting more and more towards mobile access. Society today is fast-paced and many people are connecting on the go. It’s great to be able to check your email, update Facebook, or shop online via your Android device, but there are some security pitfalls to be aware of when using unsecured public networks to connect.

The popularity of the Android

Based on the Linux kernel, Android is Google’s answer to Apple’s iOS. The Internet giant backed the development of the Android OS from the beginning and bought it outright in 2005. The platform was officially launched in 2007, but the first Android smartphone didn’t hit the shelves until October of 2008.

Like Linux, the Android OS is open source and Google releases the code under the Apache License. This really opens the door for developers to constantly improve the software and develop new apps. This could be a significant reason for the surge in Android popularity.

In 2010, Android officially became the most widely-used smartphone operating system. It has also been used in gaming systems, televisions, and digital cameras. As of March 2013, Android’s share of the global smartphone market is an amazing 64%, most of which are Samsung devices.

Mobile Internet and the Android Devices

The smartphone truly changed the way people think about mobile devices. Once considered to be primarily a telecommunications device, mobile phones are now regarded as a preferred way to access the Internet both at home and on the road. When you add the new Android-powered tablets to the mix, mobile access to the Internet is growing by leaps and bounds.

The current generation of Android devices offer full browsing compatibility and also the necessary hardware to stream media such as movies and songs from popular services like Netflix and Hulu. The speed of these devices can even support playing games like Words With Friends against other users. The technology and hardware are only going to improve and bring additional features to the Android.

The Pitfalls of Android Internet Access

As good as the Android OS is, it isn’t immune to the same security concerns someone encounters with their desktop or laptop computer. In fact, Android is even more vulnerable because most devices are used away from someone’s trusted home network. A lot of Internet activity via the Android is accomplished on unsecured public networks.

Android devices are susceptible to malware that can damage the operating system. These harmful software applications can be picked up in a variety of locations, and that even includes the Google Play Store. Users must be very careful and make sure their device is protected by a good antivirus suite. Spyware is another issue. Internet usage can be tracked and monitored. Additionally, there are always data thieves to contend with who stalk unsecured netowrks in an effort to steal private information.

While an antivirus suite will protect your Android from harmful software, it will do little to prevent your data from being exposed to the masses. To ensure that your data is invisible to prying eyes you need a VPN.

Yes, you can use a VPN on the Android

Many people still haven’t made that connection that Android devices are really just a small computer. It doesn’t register with them that using a VPN account on the Android is possible. Not only is it possible, it is the wise thing to do.

All currently popular models of Android phones, from the cheapest to the most expensive, come with a VPN client that is preinstalled. You will not have to download any special software to configure a VPN for your device. Here are step-by-step instructions for setting up an Android VPN:

  1. Purchase your VPN service from VPNaccounts.com. We’ll even discount your service some if you choose the yearly option.
  2. Check your email for the network credentials. You should receive these right away, and they include all of the information you need to get things going.
  3. Go to Settings>Wireless and Networks>VPN Settings on your Android device.
  4. Tap Add VPN
  5. Select the proper protocol for your VPN (in most cases you will be using the first one on the list, PPTP VPN.
  6. You’ll then be prompted to give your VPN a name and set the VPN server. In the VPN server field, enter the credentials supplied by VPN-accounts.com.

Once you have completed these steps your VPN will show in your list of available connections. All you have to do, once your existing connection is established, is tap your VPN name to connect.

Nothing could be much simpler, and you will sleep much better at night knowing your data is encrypted and secure. Click here to buy a vpn account.

Using a USA VPN in the USA

American VPNA USA VPN server can be very helpful in unblocking restricted websites in other countries, accessing local news and television programming abroad, and streaming media from Netflix. Truthfully, this is the reason many people use a US-based server. More and more individuals, however, are beginning to appreciate the benefits of using a VPN in the US.

VPN’s provide much more than just a way to evade geographical blocks by changing your IP address. Chief among these added benefits are the layers of security a USA VPN provides.

Who is watching you online?

When George Orwell wrote 1984, his futuristic novel about an oppressive totalitarian government, he knew nothing about the Internet. He would probably be very surprised to find that the Internet has begun to typify the restriction of freedom described in the book.

Those who surfed the Internet back in its infancy during the early to middle 1990’s will recall a Wild West atmosphere online. People tossed around personal information and surfed websites without any concern over who could be observing their activities. All of that has changed today.

Whenever you surf the Internet on an unsecured connection, like the ones you will find at the coffee shop or a hotel, your data is potentially being exposed to a plethora of individuals. The reasons for snooping online activity are as varied as those who do the snooping. At this very moment your browsing could be being tracked by:

  • The government. Four hijacked planes and a handful of boxcutters changed the entire world on 9/11. Since that time, the government has invested millions of dollars into elaborate monitoring programs that are designed to snoop Internet and mobile phone activity.
  • Your spouse. Internet love affairs have become one of the primary reasons for divorce throughout the world, and even spouses who have nothing to be concerned about are snooping the email and text messages of their partners because this has become such a part of the current culture.
  • Data thieves. They have gotten smarter and more ruthless as Wi-Fi hotspots have popped up across the US. See that guy in the suit sitting on the other side of the coffee shop? He could be stealing your data right this minute if your are using unsecured Wi-Fi.

Stopping the snoopers when surfing the web

How do you beat the snoopers? Your USA VPN can help you do that by encrypting your browsing session. A VPN allows you to become somewhat invisible online. You can move among the highways of cyberspace largely undetected when using a VPN like a cyberghost.

Encryption is deadly to a snoop. It basically transforms all of the data you send back and forth across the network into a string of random gibberish. When a snoop encounters an encrypted connection, their only option is to find another target.

Safety-conscious people are beginning to understand that using a VPN at home is just as beneficial as using one abroad. Buy your VPN account today to be protected.

Still Wondering “How to open blocked sites in Kuwait”?

Despite the fact that many people perceive Kuwait to be one of the more liberal countries in the Arab region, many expats and citizens alike can testify to the strict Internet controls in this small country. There is a growing interest in how to open blocked sites in Kuwait, and we have some answers about this and Internet regulation if you happen to be living or working there.

Is Kuwait more tolerant?

In a word, no. The leaders of Kuwait work hard to uphold the same Muslim standards that one will find in other Arab countries. This means that pornography, gambling, and dating websites are a strict no-no. Ironically, many of the nationals are a little more tolerant than their Muslim neighbors, and many of them are finding out how to open blocked sites in Kuwait, but the wishes of the individual are always superceded by the state.

The perception of Kuwait as a liberal Arab state can probably be attributed to the way the country was depicted on the world stage during the Gulf War in the 1990’s. It may also have something to do with the fact that a strong foreign military presence remains in the country, and these service members are certainly are more liberal than the average citizen.

Even so, if one wants to test the government’s stance on objectionable web content they need only to connect via one of the state-controlled ISP’s and try to access an adult or dating website. And the block doesn’t stop there. News websites and blogs which are critical of Islam are often also blocked.

All Internet restriction in Kuwait is handled by the Kuwait Ministry of Communication. It’s stated goal is to “protect the public by maintaining both public order and morality.”

How to unblock websites in Kuwait

The options for accessing restricted content in Kuwait are pretty limited, and the only one that works with any type of dependability is a VPN, or Virtual Private Network. Proxy servers are simply too slow to stream media and access blocked content. Many service members and expats in Kuwait can testify to the effectiveness of a VPN account, but even this can become difficult if those heading to the region don’t purchase VPN service in advance.

The Kuwait Ministry of Communication is fully aware than some individuals have learned how to open  blocked site in Kuwait with a VPN. They can’t necessarily prevent this, but they can prevent someone from purchasing VPN service from within the country by blocking access to VPN websites.

It is a simple process to purchase your VPN service and set it up on your device before leaving home. At VPN-accounts.com, we provide all of the necessary credentials and information you need within minutes of your purchase.

Subculture knows how to open Blocked Sites in KSA

ksaThe KSA, or Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is notorious for strict Internet controls. The residents of this powerful Arab nation are used to Internet restriction and many individuals typically abide by the KSA’s mandates, but there is a subculture alive and well in Muslim society that knows how to open blocked sites in KSA, especially pornographic ones.

Why do many Arab countries block porn?

The Muslim religion places a high value on morality within a familial context. Sex in the Arab region is viewed very differently than it is in the West. While it is common to see women flaunt their sexuality in America and even the UK, this can constitute a criminal act in Saudi Arabia. Women have been scorned, punished, and even publicly executed for sexually-related offenses. Miley Cyrus might want to take some notes in case she ever decides to pay the KSA a visit.

The KSA makes no discrimination between soft-core porn and hard-core porn. Videos like Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” are considered just as offensive as a full-fledged porn movie streamed from an adult website. Get caught accessing these sites on the state-owned ISP’s in Saudi Arabia and you could be in some serious trouble. Get your VPN account and bypass all the Internet Restrictions and Censorship.

Muslim subculture and porn

Despite the heavy-handed restrictions on porn in the KSA, there is a local subculture that actively participates in viewing adult-oriented material on the Internet. Individuals in Saudi Arabia have the same physical desires as anyone else, and some of them have learned how to open blocked sites in KSA. They make regular use of VPN technology to surf adult websites in relative anonymity.

Some would say that the presence of Western expatriates in Saudi Arabia has been responsible for creating this subculture. These foreigners are not used to the type of restrictions found in the Arab region and many of them also use a VPN when visiting the KSA. In addition, a VPN is useful in allowing these expats to retain access to Skype, Netflix, and a host of other services to which they are accustomed.

There are few accurate figures about the number of Arab nationals who view porn on a regular basis, for obvious reasons. Those who do would never publicly admit it for fear of possible prosecution under the laws of the KSA. It is safe to say, however, that the numbers are growing. Societies evolve and change, and the Arab society is no exception.

A VPN reduces risk

Whether you are a local or an expat, if you are among those who occasionally view adult material online your risk can be reduced by using a VPN. The encryption of a VPN in tandem with a masked IP address works very well to conceal your browsing activities. The real question is not how to open blocked sites in KSA, but how to open them safely without the risk of getting caught.

Create your Own Expat Shield

expats vpnExpatriates are in the fortunate position of being able to travel the world. As you can imagine, being an expat has many advantages, the chief one being the opportunity to experience other cultures and society while retaining a connection to one’s homeland. Working expats also benefit from in-demand job markets that compensate foreign workers handsomely.

There are, however, some disadvantages to being an expatriate. One of the most common complaints from expats is the restrictions placed on Internet access by many countries. These restrictions make it necessary for expats to create their own expat shield by using a VPN.

Expat Internet challenges

In the present age of digital communications, Internet access has become a primary way for individuals to stay connected with their family and friends. You probably use a variety of applications like Skype and Twitter to manage your social obligations. Expats are no different, but using these services is even more important for them because these applications offer the most affordable means of communication.

The problem is that many countries actively restrict Internet access to Web 2.0 services. This is especially true in the Arab regions and China. An expat in these locations will encounter numerous difficulties in using the very services that the ordinary citizen takes for granted.

There is also the matter of obtaining local news and television programming while traveling. This can be difficult to accomplish for expats without the use of a VPN. It is a comfort when working abroad to know what is going on at home. One example is British expats abroad wanting to watch BBC iplayer, using the VPN they overcome geographic blocks.

The challenges posed by Internet restriction and censorship are of a primary concern to expatriates, and these are things the expat should consider before packing those bags to head overseas. An expat shield is just as vital as a passport.

What is an expat shield?

An expat shield is simply another name for a VPN. When you think of a shield, what comes to mind? Protection is likely the first thing one thinks of, and that is exactly what the VPN offers. Traveling to foreign countries presents its own unique set of security challenges, and one of these is the unreliability of foreign ISP’s.

Many countries heavily monitor ISP’s in order to spy on the browsing of Web surfers. In the Arab region, many ISP’s are state-owned, thus giving the government an inordinate amount of control over what can be accessed online. It is hard to have complete faith in the security of personal data where many foreign ISP’s are concerned. An expat’s personal data can be easily exposed over an unencrypted connection. So, the first thing a VPN does is increase the security of personal data. The shield itself is called a tunnel, and all information passing through that tunnel is secured by complex encryption.

In addition, that VPN shield clears the way for unrestricted Internet access. Many blocked websites can be accessed by using the VPN server, which helps to conceal the physical location of the user. If, for example, you want to use your Netflix account to stream a movie, Netflix needs to know that you are in the United States. Your IP address will give that information to Netflix. If you are accessing the Internet via a foreign ISP, that creates a problem. Resolving the problem is as simple as connecting to your US-based VPN server.

Is it hard to set up a shield for expats?

Nothing could be easier from a technological standpoint. All modern Internet-ready devices are pre-loaded with a VPN client that only requires you to enter the network credentials supplied by your administrator. You won’t have to download anything special, and no changes are made to your computer’s hardware when you set up a VPN.

One problem that some expats do encounter in setting up their shield is waiting too long to purchase VPN service. In many cases, trying to purchase VPN access is impossible once an expat arrives in a foreign country because these countries block VPN providers. The smart expat will purchase and configure their VPN before leaving their home country.

An added benefit for expats

A great advantage of using a VPN to create an expat shield is that the VPN can also be used when the traveler returns home again. Although the user might not need to unblock websites in their home country, they can still take comfort in knowing that their data transfer is secured.

This is important because so many people today regularly connect to unsecured public networks in their home country. From coffee shop hotspots to hotel Wi-Fi, unsecured networks are a prime target of data thieves and hackers. Each time you use them your data is potentially at risk.

VPN-accounts.com has helped many expats successfully set up a VPN shield, and we can do the same for you. Don’t put this important travel task off until the last minute.

Integrating your Firewall with your VPN connection

windows-7-firewallA personal VPN account is designed to give you added levels of security when you browse the Internet by using various protocols to encrypt your data and mask your IP address. VPN’s work very well, but users need to be aware of ways that security can be unintentionally breached and make a few small adjustments to avoid potential problems.

Dropped internet connections

Your VPN from VPNaccounts is very dependable. Our servers stay up and running, and they are well-maintained. It is still possible, however, for your device to drop its connection on occasion. A dropped connection can result from many things…a brief power outage, interference with your Internet signal, etc. Dropped connections are one of those things that just happen from time to time.

The concern, as far as using a VPN goes, is that most people have their computers configured to automatically reconnect in the case of a temporary interruption of their Internet signal. When this reconnect happens, your device will connect to your ISP server but not to your VPN. Since many of these temporary signal interruptions are so brief, you might not even notice them as you are browsing. In other words, you could resume browsing and be unaware that your VPN connection has been dropped.

A simple fix when you want to stay connected to VPN

There is a simple fix to ensure that your VPN is connected each time you are online. It only requires a tweaking a few settings to your firewall.

Before we get into the instructions for managing your firewall, we should state that there are numerous firewall applications in use today. It is impossible here to give precise instructions for each one, so we’re going to address how to do this with the Windows Firewall that comes with the Windows operating system. If you are using a different firewall, the process should be fairly similar to the one we are going to show you. Here are the basic steps:

  1. Connect to your VPN. Make sure that your VPN is configured as a Private Network that you trust
  2. Go to Control PanelàSystem and SecurityàWindows Firewall. You will then arrive at the following screen:windowsfirewall-vpn-1
  3. Click Advanced Settings on the left.
  4. Click Inbound Rules on the next screen:windowsfirewall-vpn-2
  5. In the right pane, click New Rule:windowsfirewall-vpn-3
  6.  On the next screen, make sure “Program” is checked and click “Next”:windowsfirewall-vpn-4
  7. Type in the file path to your primary browser (if you are unsure how to do this, there are instructions provided on the page. For example, if you use Mozilla as your browser, enter the Mozilla file path.
  8. Next, select “Block the connection”.
  9. Next, check “Public” Make sure that “Domain” and “Private” are unchecked.
  10. Repeat these steps for Outbound Rules.

What this does is pretty simple. Whenever you are using an unsecured public network to connect to the Internet, the settings you have just configured will allow your browser to ONLY work when you are connected to your VPN. So, if your VPN connection happens to get dropped, your browser will not receive or transmit data across the public network. In other words, you’ve just created your own VPN-based firewall.

These steps might sound a little complicated, but the whole process takes less than ten minutes and you will be able to connect to public WiFi hotspots without being concerned if your VPN connection gets dropped. If it does, you will know it immediately because your browser will be blocked.

Unblock Todou Videos Outside China using a VPN

Have you heard of Todou? Todou is one of the largest video sharing sites on the Internet. From its base in China, Todou serves more than 7 million requests each day for its video content, making it responsible for more than 50% of the video web traffic in a highly restrictive country. While the Chinese government strictly monitors and censors Todou through its notorious firewall program aimed at quelling government criticism, Todou users still enjoy a fair amount of freedom in what they can post and what they can watch.

Chinese nationals who find themselves visiting other countries, however, will note that Todou is blocked outside of China. A VPN offers these individuals a way to access Todou and provides an added benefit that we will discuss a little later.

The History of Todou Video Sharing website

Todou is basically the Chinese version of YouTube. Users can watch videos and can even upload their own videos with an account. Todou was launched in April of 2005 and rapidly became one of the world’s largest users of bandwidth. The site claims to use about 1 Petabyte per day to satisfy its 7 million users. The name Todou literally translates to “Potato Net”, a play upon the couch potato theme.

The venture was started on a shoestring by Gary Wang and Marc van der Chijs, who always envisioned the site as a YouTube clone with an emphasis on video blogging. At the present time, video bloggers still account for a large number of Todou users.

YouTube serves a larger number of videos each day, but Todou videos are typically longer than ones found on YouTube. Todou videos are offered via Adobe Flash technology, but there are technological advances on the horizon for this growing Web company.

Todou Content you could be watching with a VPN

The primary content one will find on Todou can usually be placed in one of the following categories:

  • Music Videos
  • Movie Clips
  • TV show clips
  • Video blogging

One of the things that make Todou so appealing to Chinese citizens is that the government does allow some latitude in what can be shared on the site. Granted, criticism of Chinese politics is still off limits, but tongue-in-cheek humor is allowed. You’ll find many of the same types of funny and viral videos you can find on YouTube.

Using a VPN to unblock Todou outside China

As we mentioned, Todou is blocked outside of China. This is due mainly to copyright restrictions and the government’s desire to decide what parts of Chinese culture the rest of the world has access to. This can be a problem for the large number of Chinese nationals who are residing in places like the US and UK.

A large number of Chinese residents attend universities in the US or UK. Being able to watch Todou videos helps them feel connected to their home country. It is possible to restore Todou access with a VPN if the VPN provider you use has a server based in China. To view the site, you will need to sign on the Chinese server provided by your VPN host.

The really great thing is that Chinese residents who purchase a VPN to watch Todou in the US or UK receive an added benefit. Because of the multiple server options provided, the VPN can be used when these individuals return to China to unblock many sites restricted in their homeland. All they have to do is select a different server option and they are good to go.

This added benefit makes a VPN a wise choice for any Chinese resident who lives or works for a time in the US or UK. It is important that the VPN be purchased while visiting the West, because many VPN provider websites are restricted in China.

VPN’s are a must for Chinese citizens Abroad

Many expected the strict regulation of the Internet in China to be a passing concern, but in recent months the Chinese government has stepped up their censorship of digital media. Many Internet watchdog organizations have listed China as the world leader in Internet censorship. There have even been arrests within the country of those who publish controversial blogs.

The average Chinese citizen is much like the residents of less-restrictive nations. They want to be able to access all of the content the Internet has to offer without restriction. More and more people from China are using a VPN to regain their Internet freedom. Do the same, buy a vpn account today!

Thanks to VPNaccounts and the multiple vpn server options we offer, those who live in China as well as the large number of expats who work there can evade the Great Firewall of China and stay connected. It is estimated that the number of VPN users will grow substantially in the coming year as more people realize the benefits of using this technology at home and abroad. Does a VPN replace the need for an Antivirus Program?

vpn and antivirus programsVPN’s are all about securing your Internet connection through high-level encryption. Some people make the mistake of thinking that using a VPN can eliminate their need for an antivirus program. While a VPN does not function as antivirus software and cannot remove infections from your device, it can greatly reduce the chances that your computer will be affected by malware or computer viruses.

VPN + Antivirus=Superior Protection on the Internet

In order to establish top-notch security on your Internet devices, using a two-pronged approach is highly advised. A VPN and antivirus protection are two different things, but they can complement one another in making your device iron-clad and impervious to attacks.

The first step of a good security plan is to buy a VPN for Internet browsing. This will give you one of the most important tools in your security toolkit—encryption. Encryption cloaks the data transfer between your device and the Internet by using strings of random characters which are impossible to decipher. At VPNaccounts.com, we use the latest encryption technology and are constantly improving our technology to offer greater levels of protection.

Encryption alone will not prevent your device from becoming infected. Malware and spyware can be placed on your computer by many different websites, and the end result is that these harmful programs and scripts can really slow down your browsing. Because they run in the background, malware programs are hard to detect. That is why you need to implement frequent antivirus scanning of your machine to identify and remove harmful programs. This is prong two of your approach.

Using either of these technologies—VPN or antivirus protection—alone is not as effective as combining the two of them for superior protection. Think of them both as different layers of the same overall process. The more layers you have in place, the harder it becomes for someone to peel those layers back and infect your machine.

Intelligent VPN browsing

By making a few small changes to your browsing habits, you can increase the security of your device and the power of your VPN. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Always connect with your VPN. This is just common sense. Using a VPN won’t do you much good unless you get in the habit of connecting to it every time you surf the Web. Make connecting to your VPN a part of your regular routine. You can also configure your device to automatically disconnect from the Internet in case your VPN connection is dropped without warning. This rarely happens with our VPN servers, but it is still a good idea to adjust your device settings in this regard. Remember, there is nothing you cannot do with your VPN connected that you can without it, so always keep it on.
  2. Disable JavaScript. This is an easy thing to do, but many people don’t do it. Simply go into your browser settings and change them to disable JavaScript. Why? JavaScript is responsible for the transmission of numerous malware programs. Whenever you visit a site you trust you can always enable JavaScript for that site only.
  3. Reject Cookies. Cookies are bits of technology that were originally developed for a noble purpose. They enable faster load times when you visit a page that you have visited in the past, and they also can store login data which keeps you logged in to sites like Facebook and Twitter. Unfortunately, cookies can also be used to track your Internet activities and profile your interests. Go to your browser settings and choose to reject them. Once again, your browser will prompt you to accept these cookies from sites you trust so you shouldn’t be worried about blocking them across the board.

Intelligent Antivirus use

To get the most out of your antivirus software, make sure you follow a few simple tips:

  1. Update your antivirus regularly. Your antivirus program requires frequent updates in order to provide maximum security. New instances of malware and viruses are discovered almost daily, so check for updates to your antivirus program at least once a week.
  2. Develop a regular schedule of scans. Most antivirus programs will allow you to configure a set time for scanning your device. The best time to do this is once a week (minimum), at night while you sleep. This will minimize any disruptions of your browsing activity. Full scans can take several hours, so make sure you allot adequate time for the antivirus program to scan your system
  3. Scan all downloaded media and programs. Whenever you download a program or media from the Internet, take a few moments to scan the file with your antivirus software before you open it and install it on your computer.

By combining the use of a VPN and good antivirus software, you can increase the life of your device and not have to worry about compromising your data. We sell many VPN accounts, come get yours!

VPN vs Proxy Server – What to use?

vpn and proxyThere is a pretty significant debate in the technological community about which type of service is more effective at preserving anonymity online, a VPN or a Proxy Server. Without all of the facts, it is hard to decide which type of service to use if you want to remain anonymous online or access blocked services. In the interest of helping you make an informed decision, here are some things you need to know about VPN’s versus Proxy Servers.

What is a Proxy Server?

A proxy is simply a computer that becomes an intermediary between the Internet and your computer. In this regard, a proxy is somewhat effective at concealing your IP address and enabling anonymity online, but beyond that the differences between a proxy server and a VPN become more pronounced.

Specifically, proxy servers use a different type of protocol to manage their traffic. The protocols used by proxy servers are HTTP or SOCKS.

It is likely that you will encounter the HTTP variety of protocol when using a proxy server. This type of protocol is only viable for accessing websites that begin with the https:// or https:// designation. In other words, this protocol can handle traffic to web pages on the Internet. Due to its limited functionality, a proxy server with HTTP protocol has some ability to mask your IP address and provide a level of anonymity online.

The SOCKS protocol is a little more diverse in what it can handle, offering the user an ability to use FTP, IRC chat, and POP3 for email communication.

In both cases, there can be a glaring omission in terms of security. VPN’s use much more sophisticated protocols which encrypt network traffic. Therefore, not only does a VPN account  give you a level of anonymity when browsing the Internet, it also makes your data impossible to read. This is a significant difference and one that many proxy users don’t fully understand. Changing your IP address is fine, but without complex encryption like that which is offered by a VPN a user’s security is still compromised.

The Pros and Cons of Proxy Servers

If you want to get into the advantages and disadvantages of a proxy server, there are really only two that you need to be aware of: cost and speed.

Yes, it is true that many proxy servers can be used for free. In some way, this could be considered an advantage. But is it really? When it comes to proxy servers, you definitely get what you pay for. Always keep in mind that free services depend on some manner of income for their continued existence. This means of revenue can often come in the form of ads containing malware or browsing data being sold to marketing companies. You are basically trusting the owner of a free server with your sensitive data, and in most cases have no idea how that data is being monitored or used. Web-based proxies are the absolute worst offenders in this regard. Not only do they pummel users with a stream of advertisements, many of them cannot support technology like Flash or Java. You will also discover that many Web-based proxy servers have become useless because they are recognized and blocked.

The big disadvantage of a proxy server is that connections can often be very slow. Welcome to the World Wide Wait. The protocols used by proxy servers just aren’t conducive to speed, and this makes a proxy server impractical for streaming media services like Netflix or BBC iPlayer. In addition, proxy servers are notorious for dropping connections on a whim. You can be surfing on the proxy one minute and totally exposed the next.

Why VPN’s are better that a Proxy Server

Let’s begin by addressing that issue of speed. When you use a VPN there is little or no difference between the connection speed of the VPN and a regular high-speed connection.  When you consider that many people are using VPN’s or proxy servers to access blocked services that deliver streaming media, the choice is pretty simple. You need to be able to maintain a connection speed that will allow the fast transmission of data between your device and the Web. A VPN does that.

Next, the security issue must be considered. Most VPN’s use a high level of encryption, which can range from 128-bit to 2048-bit. Encryption technology is also improving all the time, and at VPNaccounts we stay on top of the advances in security in order to insure that you are strongly protected. We do not log your web traffic, not do we sell your data to marketing companies. Our revenues come solely from what you pay for VPN service.

Another reason VPN’s are better is that they do not require multiple configurations. Once you set up your VPN client to connect to the VPN server, it only takes a click to create that connection. Proxy servers can be difficult to manage in this regard.

What about support?

If you happen to find yourself in the position of needing support from the provider of a proxy server, good luck. This goes back to the concept of cost we were mentioning earlier. Free proxy services cannot afford to maintain support staff that will help you when you encounter a problem.

VPNaccounts.com has made every effort to keep your cost at a bare minimum. The small amount we charge for a VPN defers the costs of server upgrades, support staff, and improved security. Whenever you need to contact us, we do our best to respond quickly with a complete solution.

The bottom line on proxy servers

There really is no other way to say this, so we’ll be blunt. If you are serious about maintaining your anonymity online and preserving your security you will choose a VPN over a proxy server each and every time. The small cost of a VPN is minimal when you consider the risks inherent in proxy servers and the reduction in overall connection speed make proxy servers a poor choice.
